AAACAP teaches hands-on skills for Highland Lakes caregivers

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area, a division of CAPCOG, will lead a hands-on workshop that educates family caregivers how to physically and emotionally provide care. The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the First United Methodist Church at 1101 Bluebonnet Drive in Marble Falls.

Providing care for an older loved one can cause both physical and emotional strain on caregivers that could lead to an injury, this workshop seeks to reduce the risk of physical injury by providing caregivers with proper techniques for physically working with their loved ones. “The goal of this workshop is to help caregivers take care of themselves and their loved ones, and hopefully make their lives a little easier,” said Rhonda Thompson, Aging Services Program Specialist.

During the workshop, experienced caregivers and local service providers will teach strategies to support daily personal care activities and conduct skill demonstrations such as moving loved ones and proper nutrition. Presenters will also discuss how to recognize normal and abnormal signs of aging and provide caregivers with tips for managing the stress of caregiving to provide better care. AAACAP will be on site to discuss its Caregiver Support Programs as well as other agency services including medication screening, falls prevention workshops, benefits counseling.

Caregivers register for the workshop.
