Age Well Live Well events showcase older residents

The Age Well Live Well East Austin collaborative invites the public to celebrate East Austin’s unique history, as told by older residents, by attending one of three East Austin Story Map presentation and resource fairs this September. The resource fairs will host local organizations that provide older adults with information, resources, and services that affect their accessibility, safety, health, and wellness.

“Residents of all ages are welcome to attend these showcases which highlight lives well-lived,” said Patty Bordie, Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) director. “We believe everyone can benefit from the experiences of long-time East Austin residents. No person or organization can undo decades of cultural erasure, yet together we can amplify the voices of the East Austin community. Come listen to those East Austin voices, reflect on how the community has changed, and learn tips on living and aging well.”

The East Austin Story Map presentation is a digital oral history that aims to preserve the culture and legacy of East Austin. Since the health and happiness of a community depends upon social connections and a sense of belonging, the events aim to further connect residents to local services that can help them remain in their home and stayed engaged in their community.

Times and locations for the series include:

  • 10 to 11:45 a.m., Sept. 5, 2019 at the Alamo Recreation Center, 2100 Alamo Street, Austin
  • 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 16, 2019 at the South Austin Senior Activity Center, 3911 Manchaca Road, Austin
  • 9 to 11 a.m., Sept. 24, 2019 at the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, 808 Nile Street, Austin

About Age Well Live Well

The Age Well Live Well East Austin collaborative implements Texas Health and Human Services’ Age Well Live Well campaign which highlights the importance of aging well and promotes the importance of aging well to enhance community engagement and individual resiliency. The campaign outlines the steps communities can take to build a healthier tomorrow. The Capital Area Council of Governments, working as AAACAP, collected information and helped produce the East Austin Story Map Project with Texas Health and Human Services. AAACAP will also assist in running the fairs throughout September.

One initiative of the Age Well Live Well campaign is establishing and supporting community-based collaboratives throughout the state, such as Age Well Live Well East Austin, to help empower older adults to stay healthy, connected, and informed.
