CAPCOG adds deputy executive director bringing 10 years’ government experience

Anwar Sophy joined CAPCOG as its deputy executive director in late February bringing 10 years of state and local government, financial, and policy experience to the organization after positions at multiple state agencies as well as the private sector.

“Working in the public sector is one of the most awarding things you can do,” said Sophy, who was most recently a senior consultant at KPMG, a global audit, tax and advisory firm. “Public service is the payback of generosity and opportunities that I have received in life. But unfortunately, not everyone receives resources to get through life, and CAPCOG serves many communities and their residents in many ways, so I am back home here.”

At CAPCOG, Sophy will provide direction and oversight of CAPCOG’s administrative functions including contract and grant management, budgeting and finance, personnel, procurement and information technology services. He also will help develop and implement agency policies and, procedures as well as address organizational systems and standards. Prior to KPMG, he held positions at HHSC leading financial operations and budgeting and was an auditor for the Texas Comptroller’s office.

While working for the HHSC Inspector General’s Office, he helped streamline the agency’s financial policies and procedures, increasing efficiency, and identifying additional funding used in achieving more programmatic goals and expansion.

“It has been many years since I have had the deputy position at CAPCOG, so this adds important capacity to our operations as our agency continues to grow,” explained Betty Voights, CAPCOG Executive Director, adding, “Anwar has the right blend of experience that will strengthen all of our administrative operations from grant management and compliance to overhauling our hiring process.”
