Hurricanes can impact large areas beyond the coastal regions, and the CAPCOG 10-county region is no exception to these storm’s devastation. Hurricane Harvey for example impacted Bastrop, Caldwell, Fayette, Lee, Travis and Williamson counties, but every jurisdiction in the region contributed to the hurricane’s response. Multiple jurisdictions in the region also coordinate evacuee shelters as residents travel away from the coast during hurricanes. For these reasons, CAPCOG encourages all jurisdictions to participate in National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 9 through 15, to raise residents’ awareness about being prepared for these disasters by taking actions such as registering for local alerts at WarnCentralTexas.org.
“Hurricane response is a region-wide or state-wide event,” said Martin Ritchey, CAPCOG homeland security director. “Residents can get information about their personal response to hurricanes from various sources, but the best actionable information will come from local officials, and in the moment of a disaster, that information can be distributed by WarnCentralTexas.org.”
The national preparedness campaign, which CAPCOG will echo on social media, will cover topics such as determining your risk, developing an evacuation plan, and assembling disaster supplies. The CAPCOG Executive Committee is slated to proclaim the week as National Hurricane Preparedness Week during its May 12 meeting.
