CAPCOG seeks public comments on Solid Waste Plan

CAPCOG will hold a public stakeholder meeting on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021 at CAPCOG’s offices, 6800 Burleson Road, building 310, suite 165 in Austin, to gather input for its 2022-44 Regional Solid Waste Plan’s priorities, goals and objectives. Stakeholders also can email comments to Ken May or mail written comments to Attention: Ken May, Solid Waste Management Plan, 6800 Burleson Road, Building 310, Suite 165, Austin, Tx 78744, by 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, 2021.

The 22-year plan provides direction to CAPCOG on how to allocate solid waste grant funding, handle solid waste facility conformance reviews, and ensure the region doesn’t reach landfill capacity. It identifies the region’s needs and implementation of other plans to increase solid waste diversion, extending the longevity of landfills, and increase recycling, reuse and reduction rates. The 2022-44 plan’s current draft contains 15 goals and objectives that stakeholders can help prioritize. They can be reviewed at capcog.org/events/sw-plan-public-meeting/. For example, the 2000-22 plan set the region’s number one priority as the proper disposal of household hazardous waste items, and for 22 years solid waste funding has strongly supported household hazardous waste collection events and local permanent facilities.

CAPCOG and its Solid Waste Advisory Committee, which consists of solid waste practitioners and environmental advocates, will review the public input and incorporate the information into the plan in late September. The plan will then be recommended to the Executive Committee for approval before the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality gives its final approval.

Review the draft plan.
