CAPCOG to recognize seniors during Older American Month

The CAPCOG Executive Committee is set to proclaim May as Older Americans Month during its meeting on the 13th, while CAPCOG will highlight the lasting contributions and legacies made by older adults throughout the region.

This year’s Older Americans Month theme is Make Your Mark, which encourages and celebrates the countless contributions older adults make and have made to their communities. But it also highlights the difference everyone can make in the lives of older adults, in the support of caregivers, and to strengthen local communities.

When communities are not experiencing disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults make their mark by volunteering across many sectors to provide for example, social service supports, assistance with emergency preparedness education, and consultation as subject matter experts in a variety of fields from business, to healthcare and more. Many older adults serve as mentors at schools. They also serve as advocates and neighborhood ambassadors through civic engagement in their local communities or at the state level for example as representatives in the Texas Silver Haired Legislature.
