The CAPCOG Executive Committee recognized September as National Preparedness Month and urges all jurisdictions to educate and empower their residents to prepare for responding to natural and man-made disasters. To prepare residents, CAPCOG, with the aid of Texas State University, created promotional videos encouraging residents to register at WarnCentralTexas.org for local alerts.
“All year around, people should be thinking about their personal response to disasters that could affect them and their families, such as floods and wildfires,” said Martin Ritchey, CAPCOG homeland security director. “September highlights actions we can take like building a Go-Kit, an evacuation bag containing emergency supplies and important personal documents.” The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready.gov has numerous emergency planning resources for residents and businesses.
One preparedness tool for residents in the 10-county region is its emergency notifications system, WarnCentralTexas.org. By registering at the site, residents can receive emergency alerts that can include actionable messages, such as when evacuate their home, directly from their local public safety officials via text, email and phone calls. To promote registrations, CAPCOG is distributing its recently completed WarnCentralTexas.org promo videos. The English and Spanish videos run at 6 and 30 seconds. They were designed to be used on social media and television stations and to be advertisements.
