AAACAP launches first online caregiver wellness program

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP), a CAPCOG division, held the first session of its first Building Better Caregivers program online in April and will provide additional programs later this year. The six-week evidence-based intervention program uses small group sessions to equip caregivers with tools needed to be more successful in providing care to their loved ones and themselves.

“Stress is the most common issue noted by caregivers,” said Jessica Martone, AAACAP health, wellness and prevention coordinator. “Knowing that they are not alone in their caregiver journey and coming together with people in a similar situation can be a wonderful experience that reinforces and builds on the programs topics.”

Building Better Caregivers is designed to help caregivers manage stress; deal with difficult caregiver behaviors; ask for help; make difficult decisions; communicate with family, friends, and health professionals; plan for future needs and legal issues; and deal with caregiver and care partner emotions. Each week a two- and half-hour session adds tools to the caregiver’s toolbox that help break the cycle of stress related to caregiving.

A second online Building Better Caregivers program is tentatively scheduled for the fall. Caregivers interested in the course should check training.capcog.org/by-topic/aging-training for updates. AAACAP also is planning a training in the summer to teach volunteers how to lead the program in their own communities.

Would-be volunteers can contact Martone.
