Census releases 2020 count, CAPCOG aggregates data

The CAPCOG region grew by more than a half million people between 2010 and 2020 according to the 2020 Census data released in mid-August. Since the U.S. Census Bureau released the detailed data, CAPCOG’s Regional Planning and Services staff has been analyzing the region’s results. The Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown Metro area, which includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson counties, was the fastest-growing large metro area in the state and the second in the nation.

At more than 53 percent population growth, Hays County was the fastest-growing county in the state, while Williamson County came in third with a 44 percent population growth. The two counties added more residents combined than Travis County, and the three accounted for 93 percent of the region’s total growth. Austin experienced the largest population increase among the cities in the region, but several jurisdictions more than doubled in population including Bee Cave, Buda, Creedmoor, Dripping Springs, Leander, Liberty Hill, and Manor.

Andrew Hoekzema, CAPCOG Planning and Services Division director, presented more details about the preliminary analysis at the September 8 General Assembly Meeting. CAPCOG plans to conduct additional Census data analysis in the coming months and will launch online maps and other demographic visualizations to assist communities in accessing the Census data. CAPCOG will also highlight some key information by providing data summaries at capcog.org/what-we-do/data-maps/.
