EDA awards Marble Falls $2.5 M grant, CAPCOG gets COVID-19 recovery funding

The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded Marble Falls a $2.5 million grant for the design and engineering of a new waste-water plant. CAPCOG assisted the city in obtaining the funding through EDA’s Economic Adjustment Assistance Program for disaster relief related to the October 2018 floods.

“As a community, you identified a tremendous need to build a new flood resistant waste-water treatment plant, that increases the city’s capacity to protect businesses from flooding and creates future economic development,” said Joel Frushone, director of External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Commerce, EDA, during a grant announcement in early September.

CAPCOG assisted in identifying the project’s eligibility for grant funding, coordinated a project development meeting between EDA and the city, compiled demographic data to support the project and assisted in drafting the project’s narrative. It also provided application assistance through the legal review process. The project calls for a 1.5 million gallons per day waste-water treatment facility to located outside the 500-year floodplain.

“EDA has been a long-term partner for regional organizations everywhere,” said Betty Voights, CAPCOG executive director. “They have helped not just with economic development but with disaster-related economic recovery and resiliency. We couldn’t do this work without them.”

During the grant announcement, the EDA noted CAPCOG is receiving CARES Act funding to aid with COVID-19 recovery and resiliency projects. CAPCOG will use the funding to strengthen resiliency planning efforts and assist local governments in funding additional recovery projects.

Also speaking during the announcement were U.S. Congressman Roger Williams, Burnet County Judge James Oakley, Marble Falls Mayor John Packer, and Texas Association of Regional Councils Executive Director Ginny Lewis Ford.
