The Environmental Protection Agency reappointed CAPCOG’s Regional Planning and Services Director, Andrew Hoekzema, to a third, two-year term on the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee, a federal advisory committee designed to provide EPA with input on policy and technical issues associated with implementing the Clean Air Act.
“It’s a testament to the success of our air quality program and Andrew’s knowledge and expertise that he has been appointed again,” noted Betty Voights, CAPCOG’s Executive Director, who added that his involvement is beneficial to our region at a time when EPA is planning to complete its reviews of the ground-level ground-level ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM) NAAQS, both of which could have a significant impact on the region’s attainment status.
Austin is the largest city in the country in full compliance with all of EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), but the region continues to struggle to maintain compliance with the O3 NAAQS, and the region’s air quality planning efforts have served as a model for other near-nonattainment areas.
Established in 1990, the committee is a senior-level policy committee that advises the EPA on air pollution issues. Its objectives are to give recommendations on the Clean Air Act programs impact, EPA rulemaking and guidance, and other policies, standards, procedures, and regulations. Hoekzema has worked for CAPCOG on air quality issues since 2010.
