CAPCOG recognizes Family Caregivers’ efforts with webinar

As part of National Family Caregivers Month, the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) and AGE of Central Texas are partnering to providing a family caregivers webinar about reducing caregiver stress during the holidays. The CAPCOG Executive Committee also is scheduled to proclaim November as National Family Caregivers Month at its November meeting.

“Family caregivers provide an invaluable service to their loved ones and the community; recognizing their compassion and labor in November is a great way to honor them,” said Patty Bordie, AAACAP director. Across Texas, there are about 3.4 million family caregivers providing roughly $35.1 billion worth of unpaid services. Caregiving can often be a fulltime job, and most caregivers work in addition to providing care. The holidays can add extra stress factors which this year may be compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. AAACAP works year-round to provide supports and resources for caregivers, and this upcoming webinar is a way to let them know they are not alone and help is available.

The webinar will feature stress reduction practice and tips from Dr. David Zuniga, a clinical psychologist, who has worked for more than a decade in pediatric and adult oncology and end-of-life healthcare. He is a former faculty member and psychologist in the Integrative Medicine Department of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he specialized in supporting patients and staff with mindfulness-based interventions. He also is certified in mindfulness and wellness and has provided hundreds of customized mindfulness-based stress reduction seminars.
