The Texas General Land Office (GLO) announced today that seven local governments in the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) region were awarded $70.53 million as part of $1 billion in Hurricane Harvey recovery aid for areas impacted by the historic storm. The funds will be used for a variety of flood control, drainage, public facility, and other infrastructure projects.
“This is historic funding that will help fortify Texas homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, and make our communities more resilient to future natural disasters,” said GLO Commissioner George P. Bush.
CAPCOG assisted the GLO by encouraging local governments in the region to apply for the funding by communicating the funding opportunity’s project eligibility to its advisory and policy committees and coordinating stakeholder meetings consisting of local governments impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
“Creating awareness about how important mitigation projects can qualify for funding such as this can go a long way,” said Martin Ritchey, CAPCOG homeland security director. “CAPCOG is glad several jurisdictions in the region capitalized on this opportunity to strengthen and better prepare their communities for future disasters.”
These projects will benefit nearly 54,000 area residents and support areas consisting of at least 51 percent of low-to-moderate-income Texans. Projects funded within the CAPCOG region include:
- Road extension improvements in the city of Bastrop
- Roadway flooding prevention projects in the city of Elgin
- Drainage improvement projects in the city of Smithville
- A new emergency shelter in Caldwell County
- Road and flood control improvement projects in the city of Martindale
- Flood control and drainage improvement projects in the city of Uhland
- Drainage and flood control improvement projects in the city of Lexington
In total, the GLO announced that this round of funding will support 81 projects in 40 counties across the state impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
