Emergency telecommunicators learn about killer 9-1-1 calls

The CAPCOG Emergency Communications Division conducted a first of its kind, “9-1-1 Homicide: Is the Caller the Killer” course where attendees learned about recognizing indicators during 9-1-1 calls that could help detectives determine if a caller is a criminal suspect. The two-day course was attended by 50 emergency telecommunicators, law enforcement instructors, county prosecutors and detectives from throughout the region.

In addition to emergency telecommunicator earning Texas Commission on Law Enforcement training hours, courses such as this prepare them for handling a variety of situations and equips them with tools and knowledge to further save lives while performing their public safety function. They are also valuable in preparing telecommunicators for the transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) when they will receive more digital information about crimes. NG 9-1-1 will allow for multimedia messages to be sent between a caller and the ECC.

The 9-1-1 Homicide course explained researched and proven indicators as well as common criminal incident factors that can help determine if a caller is lying or if they are the killer. Attendees analyzed actual homicide calls, their cases, and their verdicts. Future courses can be found at training.capcog.org.
