Older Americans Month celebrates Communities of Strength

May marks Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate the contributions older adults make to our communities, and this year’s theme is “Communities of Strength” as the vital role of older adults were challenged by the required safety protocols.

“Many of older community members self-quarantined, which meant we temporarily lost a significant, strong and very robust part of our volunteer workforce,” explained Patty Bordie, director of the Area Agency on Aging at CAPCOG. Older adults often engage in civic organizations, mentorship programs, local public safety programs, local government operations and other volunteer activities that build strong, resilient communities.

The AAACAP staff suggest, while still social distancing, that honoring and thanking older adults during the pandemic can be done by reaching out to neighbors, helping them build new skills, and sharing their stories. Residents can do this by asking their neighbors about themselves; mailing cards to friends, family members and other loved ones; teaching older adults how video chat; helping neighbors with outdoor chores; organizing safe outdoor visits; but most importantly just thanking them.

CAPCOG’s Executive Committee proclaimed May as Older Americans Month during its April meeting. Get the proclamation at www.aaacap.org. Local governments can recognize older adults during the month by spreading the word about their contributions; fostering older adult programs year-round; and building greater connections between older adult, young-adult and youth programs.
