Striking a Balance: Caregiver Conference to be held in person

The Striking a Balance, Family Caregiver Conference is returning to an in-person format to bring national and local caregiving experts, local resources, and shared experiences to families who provide care for their loved ones. The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. August 20 at the DoubleTree Austin, 6505 N. Interstate Highway 35 in Austin and is presented by the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area and AGE of Central Texas.

“Family caregivers do so much for their loved ones; often they provide round the clock in-home care while working fulltime,” said Patty Bordie, director of AAACAP, a CAPCOG division. “This conference is about reducing their physical, mental and emotional hardships by showing them how to find support and letting them to know they are not alone.”

The conference will feature a keynote discussion about caregiving over lunch with breakout sessions before and after. Morning sessions will cover emergency preparedness in the home and hands-on caregiving skills that include using adaptive devices. The afternoon will consist of a caregivers’ panel, where panelist will tell their own stories, and breakout sessions on staying a positive caregiver and preparing advanced life directives for loved ones. A resource and information fair will be from 9 to 10 a.m. featuring vendors and nonprofit organizations that support older adult services.
